Aluminum Motorized Louvered Roof vs Polycarbonate Patio Covering

Patio and pergola covers are often sold in two very different forms: fixed translucent plastic panels (usually polycarbonate sheet or multiwall, sometimes PVC) and structural aluminum motorized louvers. They can look related on a quote sheet. In practice they solve different problems.

UV photo-oxidation

Bisphenol-A polycarbonate absorbs ultraviolet light. That energy drives photo-oxidation: chemical changes that create yellow chromophores, raise haze, and embrittle the near-surface layer. Humidity can accelerate yellowing in lab weathering work. Outdoor sheet almost always uses a co-extruded UV layer or coating on the weather face for that reason. When the layer wears, scratches, chalks away, or is installed on the wrong face, the unprotected polymer underneath continues to age.

Aluminum does not photo-yellow. A powder coat may chalk or fade over a long time if abused, but it does not turn into milky plastic.

Dirty surface, algae, and mold

As the UV-facing surface ages, it often becomes chalky and more porous than a new slick sheet, so dirt and stains stick more easily. Multiwall panels add hollow flutes that stay damp and are hard to clean from the outside. Moisture and organic film on that degraded face -- or inside the channels -- support algae and mold growth. Green or black staining in the cells after washing the top face is a common result of surface aging plus multiwall geometry.

Heat and daylight

Clear polycarbonate transmits a large share of visible light when new (solid clear sheet can be in the high eighty-percent range; multiwall is lower but still bright). Daylight and solar load travel together, so translucent covers often feel hotter than a true shade roof. Shade cloth added under the plastic is a common workaround when comfort was the real goal.

Thermal expansion

Typical engineering values put polycarbonate around 65-70 x 10^-6 per C and aluminum alloys around 21-24 x 10^-6 per C -- about two and a half to three times more expansion for polycarbonate over the same length and temperature change. Long runs need real expansion allowance (slotted fasteners, soft edge details, honest gaps). Without that, buckling, pulled fasteners, and open seals are common.

Stiffness, creep, and snow

Unfilled polycarbonate typically has an elastic modulus around 2.2-2.6 GPa. Structural aluminum alloys are around 68-70 GPa, roughly twenty-five to thirty times stiffer for the same geometry family (exact behavior still depends on thickness, span, and profile). Plastics are viscoelastic, so under sustained snow they can creep -- slowly increase deflection even below short-term yield -- which encourages ponding and more load. Aluminum extrusions do not creep like thermoplastics at outdoor temperatures; capacity still depends on engineered spans and configuration.

Fire and hail

Some polycarbonate grades show strong plastics flammability ratings at certain thicknesses (for example UL 94 V-0 on some FR grades). That rates the sheet, not the whole patio assembly. Aluminum is non-combustible as a metal. New polycarbonate is impact-tough in manufacturer hail demos; field problems more often involve aged UV-stressed panels, thin plastics sold as "poly," or framing that was never engineered for the storm. Aluminum can dent. Degraded plastic can shatter. Compare aged performance, not day-one marketing.

Aluminum louvers as the other option

A structural aluminum motorized louver roof is not a clear skylight. Closed blades provide shade and overhead weather control. Open blades provide light and airflow. The structure is powder-coated metal, so appearance is not driven by the same UV yellowing path as outdoor plastic sheet.

When polycarbonate can still make sense

Polycarbonate can fit budget greenhouse-style daylight, shorter-horizon projects, or jobs where panel replacement is acceptable. Use UV-rated sheet, install the protected face out, allow thermal movement, and seal multiwall ends. Plan for heat, optical aging, and algae risk on multiwall.

For a long-term outdoor living room, the better question is whether you want fixed glazing plastic overhead or an adjustable shade structure.
